Couples Massage: How to Customize the Session
A couples massage is two individual treatments in one room, which means almost everything can differ between the two tables. Here is what US spas will actually adjust if you ask.
The short answer
A couples massage is two separate treatments booked side by side in one room, not a single shared service. That means pressure, modality, focus areas and add-ons can be set independently for each person — most US spas will accommodate that if you specify at booking rather than on arrival.
Know the types
The standard version is a side-by-side Swedish or deep tissue session on two tables in a shared treatment room, with two therapists working simultaneously. Sixty and ninety minutes are the common lengths.
Suite packages extend that with a private room that includes a soaking tub, a fireplace, a steam shower or a relaxation area, and typically add a bath ritual, sparkling wine or a light meal. The massage itself is unchanged; you are paying for the room and the time around it.
Tandem or four-hand couples sessions are rarer and worth clarifying, because the phrase is used two ways: some spas mean two therapists per person working in sequence, others mean the standard two-therapist side-by-side arrangement. Ask which one is on offer.
Family and friends bookings use exactly the same room and format. Nothing about a couples room is specific to romantic partners, and spas book parent-and-adult-child or two friends into them routinely.
What you can actually customize
Modality per person is the biggest one and the least used. There is no rule that both people must have the same treatment. One person can have deep tissue while the other has a Swedish or hot stone session, provided the spa has therapists free for both and you say so when booking. Prenatal is the important case: an expectant partner should be booked specifically into a prenatal massage with a therapist certified for it, using a side-lying position with bolsters rather than a pregnancy cutout table.
Pressure is set independently and adjusted mid-session. Say the number out loud during the massage rather than waiting for the therapist to guess. Firm on the back and light on the legs is a normal request, not a difficult one.
Focus areas can be assigned at intake. If one of you has a specific complaint — desk-bound neck, a running injury, plantar fascia pain — flag it on the intake form and repeat it to the therapist, and expect them to spend disproportionate time there and less on areas you do not care about.
Add-ons are usually per person and priced separately: aromatherapy oil selection, a scalp or foot treatment, hot stones layered into a standard massage, CBD or arnica-based balms, dry brushing, or a hydrating foot wrap. Choose different ones without hesitation.
Room conditions are shared and therefore negotiable jointly: music genre and volume, lighting level, table warmer on or off, room temperature, and whether the therapists talk at all. Requesting a silent session is common and no one is offended.
Draping and privacy follow the same professional standards as any massage. You undress to your comfort level, you are covered except for the area being worked on, and the therapists leave the room while you get on and off the table.
What it costs
Couples massage packages carry a median of $230 across 6 spas in our data, with most quotes falling between $180 and $270. That is a package rate covering both people and, in suite bookings, the room time around the treatment.
Booking two individual sessions in the same slot is often the cheaper route to the same experience if you do not need the suite. A standard massage runs a median of $115 across 44 spas nationally, with a wide spread from $65 to $140 depending on market and session length. Specialty modalities sit above that: deep tissue at a median of $120 across 23 spas, hot stone at $125 across 16 spas, and prenatal at $112.50 across 17 spas. Ask whether the couples package is genuinely a package or simply two services billed together, because the answer determines whether the room upgrade is worth the difference.
Rates run higher in dense coastal metros and at resort properties than in mid-size inland markets, and weekend evening slots price above weekday mornings at many spas. Gratuity is generally not included in a package rate, and eighteen to twenty percent is the customary range.
Aftercare
Drink water and eat something light within the hour; a deep session on an empty stomach is a reliable way to feel lightheaded afterwards. Skip alcohol immediately after, which is worth planning around if a suite package includes a glass of something.
Expect delayed soreness for a day or two after deep tissue work, similar to post-workout ache. A warm bath with Epsom salts the same evening and gentle movement the next day help more than lying still. If either of you had hot stone work, avoid additional heat that evening.
Book the room, not just the service, if you want the unhurried version. Arriving twenty minutes early to use the steam room and staying afterward in the relaxation area is most of what people remember about the visit. Confirm on the phone how much room time is included.
